Cartagena Rhythm & Roots is the new flagship small-group journey from Colombia Music Tours. The route is built around a clear cultural and musical spine rather than generic sightseeing: Cartagena and Getsemaní introduce the contemporary city, Palenque brings community history and percussion into focus, and San Jacinto opens a window onto gaita, artisans and the traditions of Montes de María.
Each major day has a reason for being there. We use local musicians, cultural hosts, guides and community partners to add context, then protect enough free time for you to enjoy Cartagena at your own pace.

The Six-Day Journey
Day 1 · Arrival + Welcome
Arrive independently in Cartagena, with a scheduled transfer window or airport assistance based on the final operating plan. After hotel check-in and free time in the historic center, meet the group for a welcome dinner and a short hosted orientation to Cartagena's Caribbean and Afro-Colombian music map.
Day 2 · Cartagena, Getsemaní + Champeta
A guided Walled City and Getsemaní walk connects history, public space and music. Curated tastings or entries add local context, followed by free late-afternoon time. In the evening, a hosted public live-music or champeta experience introduces Cartagena after dark without manufacturing a staged private show.
Day 3 · San Basilio de Palenque
Palenque receives a dedicated full day. Private transport, local and English-language interpretation, community history, lunch, traditional music and dance, and interactive percussion where available create enough space to listen and ask questions. We do not combine Palenque with San Jacinto simply to fit more stops into one day.
Day 4 · San Jacinto: Gaita + Artisans
Leave Cartagena early for Montes de María. The working day combines hammock and weaving traditions, gaita or instrument-making context, a typical lunch and live gaita/tambor interaction. San Jacinto earns its own day so artisans and musicians are not reduced to a rushed roadside stop.
Day 5 · Hands-On Music + Farewell
Keep the morning open for rest or independent Cartagena time. In the afternoon, join a roughly 90-minute percussion and dance workshop, then return to the hotel to refresh before a farewell dinner and hosted live music.
Day 6 · Departure
Breakfast and departures. Airport transfer arrangements will be finalized once the operating quote and departure logistics are confirmed.
Music & Cultural Experiences
Three places, three distinct musical traditions: Palenque's percussion and community history, San Jacinto's gaita and artisan culture, and Cartagena's living champeta scene.
San Basilio de Palenque: Music, History + Percussion
San Basilio de Palenque is not treated as a quick excursion. The itinerary protects time for community history, local voices, lunch, music and dance, and participatory percussion when the right practitioners are available.
Keeping Palenque separate from San Jacinto gives both communities room to breathe and makes the trip stronger culturally, even if it costs more operationally.
San Jacinto: Gaita, Artisans + Montes de María
San Jacinto adds another musical vocabulary to the journey. We connect gaita to the people who build, play and teach the tradition, while artisan and hammock work provides a wider cultural frame.
The final supplier combination will be chosen for depth, realistic timing, repeatability and clear payment terms. Specific musicians or workshops will only be advertised after confirmation.
Champeta + Cartagena's Living Music Culture
The Cartagena days use strong existing culture rather than trying to imitate a premium private product. Good local interpretation, the streets and public spaces of Getsemaní, selected tastings, a vetted music night and a participatory workshop create a specialist experience that stays connected to how the city actually moves.
Live-music programming remains flexible because calendars change. We confirm the actual venue and programming for each departure rather than promising an artist who may not be available.

Not every evening needs a guide, vehicle or scheduled activity. The journey stays active without becoming exhausting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a private custom tour?
Cartagena Rhythm & Roots is being built first as a repeatable small-group departure. Private versions may be possible, but the flagship itself does not depend on a one-off custom itinerary or a single festival.
What is the minimum group size?
The working commercial minimum is eight paying guests. The target operating group is 10 to 12.
Are the dates and price final?
No. The six-day itinerary scope is set, but public dates and final pricing will only be released after hotel, transportation, Palenque, San Jacinto and music supplier terms are confirmed.
Why are Palenque and San Jacinto on separate days?
Each has enough cultural and musical depth to justify its own day. Combining them would create more road time and less meaningful interaction.
Will every evening be programmed?
No. Selected hosted music moments are part of the design, but free time is intentional and helps the trip stay relaxed, flexible and cost-conscious.
Do I need to be a musician?
No. The journey is for curious cultural travelers as well as musicians. The music is used as a way to understand place, community and history.
